Made of Place: In the Studio with Paper Sculptor Catherine Hammerton

Catherine Hammerton Artist in Residence at Emerald Gallery

There is a quiet, powerful word in Welsh that doesn’t quite have a direct English translation: Hiraeth. It describes a deep longing for home, a connection to the landscape, and a collective sense of belonging. For our 2026 Artist in Residence, Catherine Hammerton, this feeling sits right at the heart of her breathtaking paper artistry.

Catherine Hammerton

Catherine is a dreamer, a educator, and a maker based in Wales, and her practice is an intimate conversation with the world around us. Combining her love for the Welsh landscape with flea market finds and overlooked, everyday ephemera, she creates beautiful, intricate botanical sculptures and letterpress texts. Catherine takes what has been forgotten or left behind and gives it a brand-new life, filled with tenderness and memory.

Paper sculpture and Letter press artworks by Catherine Hammerton

Her contribution to our spring exhibition, Made of Place, captures the indelible marks that love leaves behind. Dedicated to her parents, her artwork features common British flowers that weather every storm, reminding us of our permanence and how we choose to gather—together and alone.

Her immense talent has caught the eye of the wider art world, too. Catherine graduated from the prestigious Royal College of Art with a Master’s degree in Mixed Media Textile Design, and her impressive pedigree continues to reach new heights. She is currently exhibiting in this year's Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) Annual Exhibition, and has also been shortlisted for the renowned Royal Academy (RA) Summer Exhibition in London.

Over her career, her unique handmade aesthetic has been featured by iconic design institutions like Liberty London for their Trash Luxe exhibition.
