Texture, Print, and Craft: "The Tender Future" Is Now Open at Emerald Gallery
Following on from the earthy, landscape-focused spirit of Made of Place, our newest exhibition, The Tender Future, is officially open in the gallery.
This show brings together four exceptional female artists from Wales, Scotland and England exploring themes of memory, nature, and quiet resilience through printmaking, letterpress, paper sculpture, and contemporary painting. It’s a beautifully considered collection, and we’re excited for you to come in and take a look around.
Meet the Artists
Each of the four featured artists brings a distinct technique and material focus to the exhibition, creating a wonderful balance of texture and craftsmanship across the gallery.
Ali Mackie: Tactile Layers & Everyday Keepsakes
Returning after her popular work in Made of Place, Ali continues her focus on the "quiet act of noticing." Working with thick, expressive textures and layered paint, Ali captures domestic thresholds, garden visitors, and quiet interior spaces that ground us. Her pieces bring a wonderfully tactile, welcoming presence to the room.
Josie Clouting: Hand-Pulled Prints of the Cornish Coastline
Josie returns to Emerald Frames with a striking body of hand-pulled prints depicting coastal Cornish landscapes. Known for capturing dramatic light and raw coastal weather, Josie’s printmaking highlights the rugged beauty of where land meets sea through bold compositions, subtle textures, and rich atmospheric tones.
Catherine Hammerton: Letterpress Prints & 3D Floral Sculptures
Catherine brings a remarkable combination of detail and craft to this show. Her work features exquisite letterpress prints embedded with pressed flowers, alongside fabulous 3D flower sculptures crafted from paper and wire. Catherine’s pieces honour botanical heritage and sisterhood with exceptional delicacy and structure.
Portia Knight: Dabberlock Seaweed Prints
We’re delighted to introduce Portia Knight to the gallery. Portia’s collection centres on detailed prints created directly using dabberlock seaweed. Her work explores natural forms and organic structures, capturing intricate marine patterns and subtle tonal variations with a clean, contemporary feel.
There is a natural creative harmony between these four collections—a balance of fine printmaking, sculptural detail, and rich surface texture that makes visiting in person such a rewarding experience.
