Made of Place: Into the Wild Landscapes with Painter Josie Clouting
Josie Clouting
For painter Josie Clouting— 2026 Artist in Residence—the creative process begins far beyond the walls of a traditional studio. It begins outside in the elements, responding intuitively to the vastness, light, and atmosphere of wild and ancient places.
Braving the shifting British weather, she loves the challenge of reacting to the changing light and playing with loose, immediate brush marks. For Josie, these outdoor sketches are a vital part of her practice; they help her remember the true feeling of a place, which then informs the larger-scale paintings, drawings, or prints made back in her home studio.
Timulus by Josie Clouting
Josie takes great joy in the sheer variety of colours and textures found in wild and ancient landscapes, bringing this vibrant energy onto the canvas through a beautiful variety of materials and expressive mark-making. Inspired by movements like Fauvism and German Expressionism, she strives to explore an emotional response to a landscape rather than getting bogged down in rigid, literal details.
Her immense talent has caught the eye of the wider art world, too. Josie’s impressive pedigree includes being selected for the prestigious Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Holly Bush Emerging Woman Painter Prize, and the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition, alongside winning the coveted Cotswolds Mount Prize at the Royal Watercolour Society Open.
Her pieces in Made of Place radiate with movement, inviting viewers to wander through abstract valleys, open skies, and cultivated botanical structures, beautifully exploring the textures, tensions, and tenderness of the places we live.
